Rockery
colored pencil (2023)
These rockeries are a traditional form of garden design in China. I have known about them since I was a little kid when I saw one in my grandparents' compound. That rockery had crane and bridge statuettes, plants, and even had a fountain on top. It was a playful area for us kids. However, it was demolished during the reconstruction of the compound. Nevertheless, it left a lasting impression on me, and I can still vividly recall it. That's why I painted these pictures, incorporating traditional images with positive meanings, such as gourd, crane, pine tree, and orchid. I also utilize negative space to enhance the appeal of the artwork.
